C-CIARN Atlantic's Sixth Regional Workshop:
Adapting Water Management in First Nations Communities to Climate
Change
October 18 & 19, 2005
Moncton, New-Brunswick
The Atlantic First Nation Environmental Network (AFNEN) and the
Canadian Climate Impacts and Adaptation Research Network (C-CIARN)
Atlantic Region are hosting, in collaboration with the First Nations
Water Management Strategy Team, a two day workshop on freshwater
and climate change impacts and adaptation. The workshop will be
held on the 18&19th of October 2005 at the Delta Beauséjour
in Moncton, New-Brunswick.
This workshop will bring together various parties involved directly
or indirectly with the management of freshwater resources in First
Nations communities (Mi’kmak, Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet), Innu,
and Passamaquoddy) in the Maritimes, Gaspésie, and Newfoundland-Labrador.
Other participants include representatives from various government
levels, industries, organizations, and research institutes.
The overall objectives of the workshop are to:
- increase the awareness of climate and other impacts on freshwater
and the incorporation of adaptation measures in First Nation decisions
regarding the use, planning, distribution, and management of freshwater
in their communities;
- foster links between the First Nations communities and those
involved in freshwater resource research, management, and planning,
to increase collaboration and understanding of water management
issues in the region; and
- increase the overall adaptive capacity of First Nations communities
by bringing them together to brainstorm on possible adaptation
framework for their freshwater systems, and by creating an environment
where solutions to the existing barriers can be explored, discussed,
and eventually implemented.
The workshop will the most up-to-date information available on
the expected impacts of climate change on and other threats to Atlantic
Canada’s water resources. As well, it will introduce participants
to funding programs available for research and development for appropriate
adaptive strategies pertaining to water management.
Participants will be encouraged to provide their perspectives
on the issues that climate change and other threats present, to
engage in discussions on key knowledge gaps and research priorities,
and to discuss appropriate adaptation strategies that recognize
the multiple values associated with the management of Atlantic Canada's
water resources.
